Short-term rentals

Short-term rentals are not permitted in residential districts.
Salt Lake City has no ordinance allowing short-term rentals in residential districts. The only permitted short-term stays are nightly accommodations in commercial and mixed-use districts for hotels, motels, hostels, rooming houses, and bed-and-breakfasts — and only where the zoning district allows the specific use and the operator holds a business license. Rentals of 30 days or longer in residential districts are not affected.
- Restriction: No ordinance authorizes STRs in residential (R-zoned) districts
- Affirmative: Nightly stays allowed only in commercial / mixed-use zones, for hotels, hostels, B&Bs, etc.
- Affirmative: Rentals of 30 days or longer in residential zones are permitted with a business license
- Restriction: To permit STRs broadly, a Code text amendment to several sections would be required
